According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), in 2003-04, Australian households spent 4% of their total expenditure on cultural goods and services, totalling an estimated $14.6 billion. This expenditure ranges from spending on media (eg. newspapers, hi-fi equipment) through to spending more commonly associated with the Arts such as performance tickets and works purchases.

In 2007, the ABS survey of Work in Selected Culture and Leisure Activities found that there were about 3.5 million people (22% of the population aged 15 years and over) in Australia who had worked in a culture or leisure activity in the 12 months before interview. Of these, some 701,800 stated that their involvement was part of their main job. However it should be noted that this involvement could have been a relatively minor part of the person’s job. The sector also receives significant support from volunteers. The ABS 2006 Voluntary Work Survey found some 207,200 people undertook voluntary work for heritage and arts organisations.

Arts organisations and businesses are diverse. Many receive significant financial contributions from government agencies and philanthropists, while others operate on a shoestring budget.
